Around 1982 a group of like-minded people from Govt. College of Aurangabad got together for debating and one act play competitions. In those days they staged plays based on social issues such as ‘Stree’, ‘Galli’ and a different Children's play 'De Danaadan’, based on the issues related to children’s life. Gradually more theatre lovers from the city started joining the group’s activities. These theatre amateurs with inspiration and energy from the socio-cultural environment of Aurangabad, staged two-act play ‘Mother’s House’ written by Prashant Dalvi and Directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni in the state drama competition. It reached the final round of the competition and left a lasting impression on the theatre world of Aurangabad.

After graduating from the college, this energetic group named itself JIGISHA (Desire to win) and organized its first "Jigisha Natya Sahavas" (Theatre Festival) on 11th and 12th May 1983. Following five years they spent their life dedicated entirely to the theatre.

During the staging of ‘Stree’, a team of about 20-25 young girls came together. To depict the power of womanhood, "STREE" was performed in the form of street play, terrace play and corner play. Nearly 125 shows of this one-act play were performed all over Maharashtra. It was also specially invited for the ‘Stree Mukti Yatra’ that was organized in western Maharashtra region around that time. Apart from this, the group also staged one-act plays such as ‘Bhuyaar’, ‘Galli’, ’Smashaanaatala Sona’and ‘Paawasaacha’ gaana’.

After passing the phase of adolescence itself, ‘Jigisha’ got into the rhythm with a play ‘Pauganda’ (The Adolescence) in 1984. "Pauganda" represented the emotional and mental transformations of an adolescent mind in form of a collage. It excelled on various platforms including a state level conference on psychology and the first ‘Arvind Deshapnde Mahotsav’ organized by ‘Avishkar’ in Mumbai. This led to introduce ‘Jigisha’s ability to experiment with the nuances of the theatre to Mumbai’s Chhabildaas Movement for the first time.

To create committed audience, Jigisha introduced and implemented successfully ‘Audience Membership Scheme’ in Aurangabad. As part of this scheme ‘Jigisha’ staged plays such as ‘Poster’, ‘Ashadha kaa Ek Din’, ‘Hamidabaichi Kothi’, ‘Jaswandi’ and ‘Hruday’.

Instead of going copy-cat on the already famous plays of the commercial theatre, it nurtured its own talented play writers, directors, actors as well as stage managers. Rich content, consistency, hunger for novelty and freshness of art-forms, conscious efforts to develop its own theatrical language and ever-strong connection with the social activism emerged as salient characteristics of ‘Jigisha’.

Looking to expand ‘Jigisha’s theatre world beyond ‘Aurangabad, to seek knowledge and experience, to face new challenges, conquer new horizons and to expand their activities to wider audiences most active theatre artists working with Jigisha migrated en masse to Mumbai during the period of 1987 to 1990. This group included Chandrakant Kulkarni, Prashant Dalvi, Prateeksha Lonkar, Pratima Lonkar, Jitendra Kulkarni, Shreepad Padmakar, Abhay Joshi, Milind Joshi, Milind Safai, Ashutosh Bhalerao and Sameer Patil. Several artists have migrated to Mumbai in the past, not only from Maharashtra but from the entire country and established themselves in the city of many opportunities. But it was rare incidence in which an entire group of parallel theatre artists arriving in this city along with their passion for the theatre. Several people have contributed to the further journey of Jigisha including Play-wright Ajit Dalvi, Poet Dasoo Vaidya as well as Bhagyashree Jadhav. Vivek Patki, Aarti Vaidya, Sarita Patankar, Ajay Ambekar, Shubhangi Gokhale, Ujjwala Paropkari, Sushama Deshpande, Sangita Jogalekar, Vivek Dhage, Sujata Kango, Nita Pansare and many others are still connected. ‘Jigisha’ family expanded further in Mumbai with the support from other performing artists, writers, technicians as well as stage managers which developed into a cohesive team of theatre lovers.

In 1998 ‘Jigisha’ group registered itself as a private limited company under the name ‘Jigisha Creations Pvt. Ltd.’. It executed the production of much appreciated and successful Marathi films such as ‘Bindhast’ ‘Kaaydyaacha Bolaa’, ‘Kadaachit’. It also co-produced a acclaimed Marathi film ‘Bhet’.

Jigisha Creations Pvt. Ltd. ventured in to the small screen with the TV serials ‘Pimpalpaan’ and ‘Tikal Te Political’ as well as several documentaries. It also staged plays such as ‘’Celebration’, ‘Doctor Tumhisuddha!’ and ‘Manomeelan’ (a co-production). It organized ‘Theatre Awareness and Training Workshops’ for young and aspiring theatre artists. To take the ‘experimental theatre’ to the sub-urban Mumbai, in 2006 ‘Jigisha’ started ‘Audience Membership scheme’ at ‘Nandadeep High school’ in Goregaon. Today, on 11th May ‘Jigisha’ has completed 30 years of its theatre journey which we all hope will continue for many more years to come.
